SEX WORK / ESCORT WORK

So you’d like to start a career as an escort but don’t know where to start…

Sex-work can be a fun and exciting career path with the potential for great financial reward and fulfilling experiences.

The flexible nature of the work and the financial potential are major drawcards to the industry as it can create the freedom to pursuit other interests be it study, hobbies, travel or business. Imagine working one night a week to earn more than you would the entire week at a conventional job! Now imagine the earning potential of multiple nights!

That said though, the industry really isn’t for everyone, focusing solely on the financial aspect of it can lead you to burn-out and failure. It really isn’t just a ‘get-rich-quick’ scheme and there are many things to consider – but that’s not to say there aren’t a large amount of people in the industry that find it hugely rewarding and keep coming back!

So you’ve thought about it and want to become an escort…

Great! Information is key to making informed decisions about where, when and how you would like to work, we have included information on the various types of FSSW below to help you on your journey to a successful and rewarding career.

Please Note: We will be referring to FSSW within NSW, laws vary wildly between states regarding sex work and it is highly advised you seek additional information in regards to the state in which you will be working in.

Escorting or Full-Service Sex Work (FSSW) is generally broken down into 3 categories:
– Escort Agency Work (where there is no fixed place of service – work is solely outcall based)
– Brothel Work (where there is a fixed place of service but may also offer outcall options)
– Private Work (where everything is self-managed)

Deciding the right option for you is entirely dependent on what kind of work and experience you are after, all have both positive and negative attributes that need to be considered.

Escort Agency Work

Escort Agency work relates to work under a business with no fixed location for service. The work is entirely outcall based (travelling to the client’s hotel room or home) and requires some level of independence and management on the worker’s part.

Escort Agencies handle marketing and bookings/enquiries for service providers and direct them to where the client is located.

Things to Consider - Escort Agencies

Generally the cut for service providers is higher working through escort agencies however this is at the expense of certain security procedures and features.

Most Escort Agencies do not have dedicated drivers/security. What this means is that the service provider is required to book their own means of transport (either taxi or via ridesharing app) which is reimbursed later. This affords some flexibility as you have the option of deciding the mode of transportation but it means that you don’t have ready access to someone with experience in regards to security and safety issues on the outcall.

Being with an Escort Agency also means that you are rarely in contact with other service providers (apart from when the client books multiple ladies), this may isolate you from other sources of information and experience.

Depending on the Agency, training may be very limited, so your health and safety can be entirely in you own hands when at an outcall.

However, there are positives to working for an agency. For one, you do not have to be at a venue for the duration of a “shift”, you may carry on about your day until a booking request comes in which staff will advise you on and you have greater flexibility.

Of course all of this is dependent on the specific agency you work for, some take more care and consideration with ladies than others – speak to a few before deciding the right agency for you.

Positives to Escort Agency Work: Higher payment per client, greater flexibility, advertising taken care of, enquiries and bookings taken for you.

Negatives: Safety and security aspects – with any outcall you don’t really know what the situation is until you arrive, lack of networking opportunities and limited training available.

Brothel Work

Brothel Work relates to FSSW within a fixed place of business. The work specifically relates to incall services (services within the venue) but some venues may also offer outcalls in addition to incall services.

Brothels handle the marketing, security, booking/enquires and are generally the most comprehensive in the level of management.

Things to Consider - Brothels

Brothels (or at least successful ones) are high-traffic businesses, meaning a large clientele-base and a fast paced working environment, this may be over-whelming for some and may not be the ideal work environment for everyone. If you are starting out in a brothel, it’s best to start on a quieter shift to familiarise yourself with where things are and the procedures at the venue.

The actual quality of management at brothels and even the venues themselves can vary widely, without having any experience in the industry it’s very hard to tell where is a good place to start at.

It is good to have a list of questions when approaching a venue so that you can gauge if it the right environment for you, with the support level you require.

We will write a dedicated post for Brothel Work and about picking the right venue soon – Check Back for updates!

Positives for Brothel Work: Little to no self-management required, good for service providers that require more direction/management, networking with other ladies for advice, etc.

Negatives: High-traffic may be overwhelming, ‘shift’ times may be long or inconvenient, earning potential varies, minimum service requirements and management can be inexperienced or unsupportive.

Private Work / Independent Escort

“Private Work” relates to work independently taken and managed by the service provider.

The advertising/marketing, security, enquiries, bookings, etc are all entirely self-managed.

Things to Consider - Private Work

As private work is entirely independent, self-motivation and responsibility is key to being successful in the field.

It can be both rewarding and challenging.

Rewarding in the sense that every decision you make; your pricing structure, the way you’d like to be marketed, your services and clients you wish to see, are entirely at your discretion. You have total control over everything.

It can also be challenging in many aspects; knowing which platform to advertise on, how to market yourself along with handling your own safety and security needs can be daunting. There is also the costs of overheads (advertising costs, dedicated “working phones/numbers”, cost of incall locations/hotel rooms, etc).

Positives of Private Work: If you have experience in the industry, are aware of how to operate and are very self-motivated this may be the right avenue for you. With complete autonomy you also have the ability to pick and choose which clients or jobs you wish to see and your own pricing, etc.

Negatives: Overheads, security/safety, fielding enquiries, potentially inconsistent work, knowing how to market/advertise, etc.

Footnote

This blog post’s purpose is to give you things to consider when joining the Full-Service Sex Work industry, it is by no means universally extensive and experiences of individuals can vary wildly even within each category of work.

We have attempted to be as open and honest about each category in order for those looking into the industry to have a clear idea of what to expect – this is not designed to convince you either for or against the industry, we just have the view that information is key to making informed decisions and consent.
